As we rolled into the new millenium, R&B experienced a major shift, spearheaded by artists like Erykah Badu, D’Angelo, J Dilla and the wider Soulquarians collective. Sessions at Electric Lady Studios in Greenwich Village saw them dusting off the vintage synths and kits of the two previous decades, and pairing analog warmth and organic live sessions with modern sampling and production techniques. AQUARIUS EARTH takes up the palette of earthy tones, funk groove, hip-hop percussion and infectious melody that brought the soul back to the 90s and beyond.

In early 90s New York, hip hop swarmed from the underground onto Main Street. Raw and unpolished, it crackled with boom-bap drums spliced with sonic textures ripped from old soundtracks. Funky bass oozed beneath dusty pianos. Single-note psychedelic hits danced between disjointed vocal stabs. The sound exploded with power and strength, representing a new style that would change hip hop, forever.

Recently, a new genre of music has emerged. It fuses street-smart, beat music with uptempo synths and the positive energy of house music. This future funk is inspired by 90s R&B, 80s urban funk, and feel-good body music, and influenced by modern genres like trap, bass, and footwork. It reached a global audience through popular podcasts from the LA-based Soulection crew, and can be found in works of artists like Kaytranada, Anderson .PAAK, Mr. Carmack, Lakim, Dâm-Funk, and GoldLink.

Havoc first rose to fame as a member of Mobb Deep – one of the hardest hitting duos to emerge from the early 90s hip hop scene in Queens, NY. His signature production style was featured on recordings from Nas, The Notorious B.I.G., P. Diddy, Method Man, and more. In his second decade as a producer, Havoc took up MC duties on solo records while contributing production duties to 50 Cent. Now Havoc’s sound can be heard on fresh cuts from Kanye West’s The Life of Pablo.
